Information security demonstrates the need for confidence in the data economy

15/02/2021

It is not new that data constitute a strategic asset, they even determine the competitiveness and relevance of an organization. The exponential growth of new technologies diversifies the data collection capacity and increases its availability. Today, trends can be uniquely identified.

Data is at the core of the economy and fosters innovation. People and businesses use data to reduce transaction costs and make informed decisions. Diverse actors such as individuals, families and organizations are both consumers and producers of data. This digital ecosystem outlines the contours of the data economy.

This asset is increasingly becoming a critical factor for economic activities, transforming them profoundly. Its effects have the potential to benefit various sectors of society and the economy, organizing new opportunities for development and economic growth.

However, trust is imperative. Its absence can remove the stability of business environments and disorganize markets. Therefore, governance standards, information security mechanisms and regulations that improve the protection of stakeholders, inspiring and maintaining confidence in the data economy, gain importance.

Recently, the national press reported information security incidents, such as the cyber attack on the Superior Court of Justice, which made the Court’s entire database inaccessible, covering the entirety of the collection of lawsuits, as well as the exposure of data from millions of users of private hosting booking platforms, such as personal data and details about reservations made since 2013.

The response from the Brazilian Judiciary was immediate. As of yesterday, the President of the STF and CNJ, Minister Luiz Fux, announced the creation, by the CNJ, of a Cybernetics Committee for the Protection of Digital Justice, in order to monitor and debate initiatives aimed at improving the security of the electronic systems of Brazilian courts.

In economic activities, companies also need to focus on initiatives aimed at preserving the information of customers and related parties, ensuring the involvement of senior management, training and corporate education for employees, third parties and suppliers. Undoubtedly, measures like these contribute to reduce costs, increase confidence and improve reputation.

This context demonstrates the urgency and indispensability for organizations to map information flows, review remote access policies, security protocols of cloud providers and data center services, diagnosing risks and vulnerabilities, together with assessing operations compliance to requirements set out in the laws and regulations of the jurisdictions in which they operate.

Therefore, it is necessary to assess the levels of integrity and encryption, data protection, assertiveness of security tools and detection and response solutions, encompassing all operations and interactions of the organization. That is, rethinking a new approach that promotes the reformulation of IT operations and the adoption of high standards of governance through specific action plans, using indicators to monitor the performance of these new corporate strategies, which aim to increase the efficiency of IT operations. information security.

Technology can also be a support to achieve these purposes, from the implementation of varied authentication techniques to confirm the identity of users (two-step authentication, biometrics, identification card) to the Artificial Intelligence models developed to autonomously recognize threats and identify risks of information security incidents, based on the correlation between data from various security tools based on predefined rules, improving the ability to respond to incidents.

Information security is, therefore, a call for organizations to establish a solid structure that disseminates the confidence of people and stakeholders in the data economy. Initiatives are expected to ensure high levels of protection for privacy and personal data, in order to foster an innovative and continuously growing business environment.
